Dubby breakbeat science and bass abstractions from a low-profile New Zealand producer. Based in Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand, Samuel Forbes grew up in the port town of Lyttelton, just outside of Christchurch. Raised on dub reggae, D.I.Y sound system culture, and freshly cut acetate dubplates, he was fascinated by UK-born hardcore continuum sounds of jungle/drum & bass, grime, and dubstep from a young age. After learning to DJ, he relocated to the capital, where he opened his ears to techno, house, footwork, ambient and jazz while honing his skills as a graphic designer, hardware-based music producer, and florist.
Having previously contributed a footwork track titled ‘Crouching’ to Juke Bounce Werk’s JBDUBZ Vol. 7 compilation in 2017, Here/Walk is Samuel’s debut solo EP. Across both tracks, he dials the frantic breakbeats of jungle/drum & bass down to 130 bpm, turns up the bass weight, and splices fragments of dub, R&B, ambient and drone into his MPC2000XL and Yamaha TX81Z powered soundworld.
On ‘Here’, cinematic synth strings and bells set the stage for a matrix of subby kicks, a chunky break and ghostly sample manipulation, which holds a steady shape, before collapsing into a feverish ambient coda. Led by a washed-out R&B sample, ‘Walk’ unfolds in a similar mid-tempo breakbeat mode punctuated by handclaps, short ethereal breakdowns and undulating synths. Rounding things out, fellow Wellington-based producer/DJ Borrowed CS contributes a hauntological remix of ‘Here’. Stripping the track down, he transforms it into a hazy, half-remembered dream.

This music is timeless--I can't believe it was made over 2 decades ago. Simplicity and thoughtful production make this hold up to multiple listens. I missed this the first go 'round--happy to have found this classic re-released and remastered! muhonenm
